1914 год, первый день Первой мировой войны. В пригородной корчме (аустерии) на окраине галицийского местечка в Австро-Венгрии ищут спасения от российских казаков местные евреи (торговцы, хасиды, жители города), польский ксёндз, венгерский гусар. Уже принесены первые жертвы, гремят взрывы, город горит, казаки бесчинствуют, хасиды служат свои молебны. Евреи, опасаясь погромов, обсуждают вопрос о побеге из города. Сюда же приносит убитую девушку Асю влюблённый в неё Бумель. Хозяин аустерии, мудрый Таг, пытается успокоить своих гостей, навести хоть какой-то порядок и организовать обряд очищения убитой девушки по еврейскому обычаю. Он не помышляет о бегстве: «Если человек не чувствует себя уверенно в собственной постели, где он может чувствовать себя уверенно?» Все с ужасом ждут нашествия русских казаков, которые убивают, жгут, насилуют. «Первая ночь – самая страшная…»
