Герой фильма – словно живая иллюстрация тезиса о том, что хуже крыс могут быть только адвокаты. Юрист по фамилии Кон тихо-мирно трудился на ниве правосудия и, наверное, умер бы в неизвестности, если бы не наступили времена охоты за ведьмами. Кон, еврей по национальности, становится правой рукой пресловутого сенатора Маккарти, возглавившего комиссию по антиамериканской деятельности. Вот когда настал звездный час для гражданина Кона. Он громил всех врагов Америки, особенно евреев – поскольку сам был евреем и поэтому никто не мог обвинить его в антисемитизме. Джеймс Вудс блестяще сыграл роль циника и карьериста, который в результате получил по заслугам. Кон умер в одиночестве, отвергнутый всеми.
