Однажды мальчик по имени Билике нашел мячик для пинг-понга. Вроде бы ничего сверхъестественного, если бы не то обстоятельство, что живет Билике со всей своей родней в юрте посреди бескрайней монгольской степи и мячиков для пинг-понга он отродясь не видел. Откуда взялся этот идеально круглый белый шарик? Для чего он нужен? Что им можно делать? Для мальчика, растущего на траве, не знающего ни электричества, ни водопровода, этот странный предмет становится самой большой загадкой. Бабушка считает, что это огромная жемчужина, посланная богами. Просидев возле нее всю ночь, Билике с друзьями решают, что бабушка ошиблась – шарик же не светится в темноте! Другие члены семьи и вовсе затруднились объяснить, что это за штучка. Тогда мальчишки отправляются в монастырь, к ламам, но даже самые умные люди в степи не смогли предложить любопытным монгольским подросткам, для чего нужен этот странный предмет. Легкий, круглый, маленький, белый. Ну для чего он, скажите? Шарик для пинг-понга становится стимулом для познания целого мира…
