После гражданской войны Севера и Юга, первопроходец Пенни Бакстер строит небольшой дом вместе с женой Орри и одиннадцатилетним сыном Джоди на плодородных почвах Флориды. Джоди – любознательный мальчик, он целые дни проводит в лесу, наблюдая за незнакомым ему животным миром. Каждый день, возвращаясь с прогулки, ребенок просит отца и мать разрешить ему завести домашнего питомца: енота или медвежонка, опоссума или малышку пантеру. Мать отказывает мальчику в его просьбах, она недавно схоронила трех детей, и новое живое существо не приемлет ее душа. Однажды, во время охоты, Пенни был укушен гремучей змеей и для прекращения действия яда он вынужден был убить самку оленя, вырезать ее печень и приложить к укусу. Действие яда ослаблено, но в лесу остался маленький олененок, который обязательно погибнет без матери и Джоди просит родителей позволить оставить ему питомца. Родители соглашаются, мальчик счастлив, но, пройдет всего один год, и он поймет, что приручить дикое животное невозможно…
