Конец правления сёгуната Токугава. Правительство всеми силами пытается удержать власть, а для этого нужно много денег. Для того, что бы поднять доходы казны, во все округа рассылаются неуловимые шпионы-нинзя или, как их еще называют, «тени». Их цель выявить доходы феодов, скрытые от сёгуната. Выявив нарушителей закона, сёгунат избавлялся от владельцев земель, объявив их изменниками, а их земли переходили под управление сёгуната. Это история рассказанная с другой стороны «баррикады», от имени людей, чьи судьбы были исковерканы действиями «теней» и теми, кто поставил целью своей жизни месть. Они называли себя «Охотниками за тенями». Сёгунат получил доказательства, что в одном из мелких горных кланов тайно добывают золото. Но на этот раз, получить земли горного клана, непросто, даже для сёгуната, ведь эти земли, были получены предком клана за мужество, от самого основателя династии Токугава. Интрига закручивается вокруг доставки бумаг, подтверждающих право на владение землей. Клану нужно доставить их в Эдо, а сёгунату уничтожить. Сёгунат посылает «теней» на перехват курьеров, а «охотники» берутся курьеров охранять. Задача будет сложной, тем более, в недрах самого клана есть предатель, глубоко законспирированный, тайный агент «теней»…
