На отдаленный аванпост в Ливийской пустыне пребывает группа молодых итальянцев. Под палящим солнцем, в окружении открыточных экзотических пейзажей героям почти удается забыть о том, что на дворе – лето 1941 года и в мире идет война, а сами они – военные медики, прибывшие сюда прямиком из тренировочного лагеря. Каждый из героев занят своим делом. Изнывающий от любви майор днями напролет пишет письме оставленной дома невесте. Юный лейтенант Скальви наслаждается исполнением своей мечты – ведь он и в армию пошел лишь затем, чтобы посмотреть мир.
