Союз уже развалился, но люди разных национальностей еще держатся друг за друга на небольшой улочке старого, предназначенного под снос района под названием «Шанхай». Сюжет сосредоточен на семье, состоящей из деда, жены его сына, пропавшего без вести на полях «мирных» сражений, и внука. Зритель узнает чем и как живут их соседи собирающиеся на историческую родину немцы, не знающие ни слова по-немецки, чудаковатый скульптор-казах, и многие другие. Дед, еще не старый мужчина, собирается снова вступить в брак и знакомится с хорошей женщиной. Фильм пронизан грустью и болью о временах, которые уходят и вряд ли когда-нибудь смогут вернуться, когда люди жили в этом районе одной семьей, невзирая на национальную принадлежность.
