Мистер Ши, пенсионер из Пекина, отправляется в небольшой городок в США навестить свою дочь. Йилан только что развелась и мистер Ши решает погостить у нее, пока она не оправится после развода. Всем своим новым американским знакомым мистер Ши не без гордости сообщает, что он конструирует ракеты, и наслаждается вниманием и любопытством своих собеседников. Откровенное позерство старика раздражает Йилан, впрочем, как и его попытки разобраться в ее новой жизни и стать ее частью – когда отец начинает расспрашивать ее о причинах развода, дочь старательно избегает этой темы. Но даже холодный прием не может умерить энтузиазм мистера Ши, он с удовольствием гуляет по городу и однажды встречает пожилую женщину, Мадам, эмигрировавшую из Ирана. Как и мистер Ши, она совершенно не говорит по-английски, но им удается найти свой собственный язык общения, и вскоре между ними устанавливаются теплые дружеские отношения. Для обоих эта дружба становится спасением от недружелюбной реальности, но идиллии приходит конец, когда сын Мадам отправляет ее в дом для престарелых. В этот момент конфликт мистера Ши с дочерью достигает своего апогея – но выяснение отношений удивительным образом способствует тому, что два близких человека, наконец, начинают немного понимать друг друга.
