Кажется, 12-летний Паули мало чем отличается от своих сверстников. Он живет вместе с матерью, едва сводящей концы с концами, и умственно отсталым старшим братом на окраине маленького городка, в котором пышным цветом цветет безработица. Но у Паули есть талант, который может определить его будущее – он подающий большие надежды бегун на дальние дистанции. Когда врачи ставят его маме диагноз рак, ей может помочь только чудо – Паули искренне верит, что чудо действительно может случиться, стоит лишь попросить об этом Деву Марию. Стащив из школьной раздевалки кроссовки, он отправляется в паломничество к знаменитой иконе Черной Мадонны, в монастырь паулинов на Ясной Гуре. Мальчика берется сопровождать его школьный физрук Анджей. Он тоже когда-то был подающим надежды спортсменом, а теперь превратился в опустившегося алкоголика, все существование которого сводится к тому, чтобы каждый день находить новую причину не прикасаться к бутылке. И путешествие с Паули оказывается именно такой причиной. И неизвестно, кто кого больше поддерживает в этой странной паре: ребенок, чья вера в божественное вмешательство сильна и непоколебима, или взрослый человек, который давно уже ни во что и ни в кого не верит.
